Today, Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group took to the toasty Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank, in protest against fuel poverty. The point was clear: many of those present couldn’t afford to heat their homes, so have no choice but to spend their days in warm public spaces. Pensioners took to the festival hall to make clear the injustice of being forced out of their own homes by the cold.
The reaction of Festival Hall security had to be seen to be believed: the police were called within minutes. This resulted in a group of pensioners – sitting down with hot cups of tea and talking about how they’re surviving rocketing bills – being threatened with arrest.
Having been forced outside, people donned emergency blankets to keep warm outside, with the EDF-sponsored London Eye in view.
Pensioners in the UK are too cold to heat their homes, but when they try and get warm somewhere else, they’re evicted. This is why we’re taking to the streets this weekend.

It’s not just pensioners that are in fuel poverty and need more heating than others, and there are some many pensioners who are fit, well and have good incomes/savings and don’t need the fuel allowance given every year. What about disabled people, they need more heating than non disabled people, why is this never brought before parlia, emt and why don’t they het offered a fuel allowance?
Posted by Marion | February 16, 2013, 4:08 pmWhy has humanity sunk so low? The Police were needed to move a group of cold pensioners, enjoying a cup tea in the warmth, to a very cold outside, whatever next!
This government must look at the folly of their actions, vulnerable people are suffering, many will die through the cold because they cannot heat their homes. Wake up Mr. Cameron, open your eyes and look at the suffering you are causing, give back their benefits, ensure people can keep warm, and don’t treat our older people as criminals.
